Universal Soldier is an action-platformer based on Roland Emmerich's 1992 sci-fi action film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren. The game casts players as Luc Deveraux (GR13), a resurrected super-soldier who must break free from military programming and battle rogue units across dangerous military installations.
The Turrican Connection:
Originally engineered using the game engine and code base of Factor 5's acclaimed platformer Turrican, the project was repurposed into a movie tie-in by Accolade during the height of the 16-bit era.
Unreleased American Prototype Status:
Although fully developed and prepared for a North American retail launch, the commercial release of the SNES version was ultimately canceled in the United States, leaving the game restricted to rare developer builds, trade show samples, and prototype cartridges. (While the SNES version remained unreleased in the US, completed builds later surfaced, and the title did see retail distribution in Europe via different publishers).
