Vintage Keys is a specialized, 1U rack-mountable sample-playback (PCM) digital sound module. Designed during an era when musicians were experiencing severe fatigue from cold, sterile digital synthesizers, E-mu engineered this module to serve as a comprehensive, highly accurate hardware "vault" of classic, sought-after vintage analog keyboards, organs, and synthesizers from the 1960s, '70s, and '80s.
The module features a 32-voice polyphony architecture and is 16-part multi-timbral over standard MIDI channels. The core sound library is stored in an 8-Megabyte internal ROM pool, featuring 16-bit multi-samples meticulously recorded from legendary instruments like the Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer, Hohner Clavinet, Hammond B3 organ, and classic analog synthesizers from Moog, Sequential Circuits, ARP, Mellotron, and Oberheim.
What elevates Vintage Keys from a basic sample-player into a true synthesizer is its powerful sound-shaping engine. It utilizes E-mu’s acclaimed digital H-Chip, which pairs the PCM samples with 32 advanced, digitally controlled, resonant low-pass filters. It also includes 6-stage envelope generators and dual LFOs per voice. This allows users to sweep, modulate, and process vintage acoustic and electromechanical samples using true analog-style synthesis techniques. The back panel provides flexible studio routing with a main stereo output pair and four independent sub-outputs for external processing.
The Filter Pedigree: The digital resonant filters inside Vintage Keys are highly praised for their smooth, warm character. They were directly modeled after the legendary, proprietary analog filter chips designed by Dave Rossum for E-mu’s ultra-high-end vintage modular systems and the iconic Emulator sampler series.
The Plus Expansion: Due to its immense commercial success among studio composers, E-mu later released an upgraded version called the Vintage Keys Plus (1994). This variant expanded the internal sample ROM from 8MB to 16MB, packing in an additional 250 presets that focused heavily on rare analog synthesizer waveforms and classic drum machine samples.
The Magic of MidiPatch: The module features E-mu’s advanced "MidiPatch" modulation matrix. This software routing system allows players to map real-time MIDI controllers (like key velocity, aftertouch, modulation wheels, or breath controllers) directly to internal synthesis parameters such as filter cutoff, sample start point, or panning on the fly.
An Affordable Collector's Solution: In 1993, buying even two or three of the vintage instruments contained inside this module would have cost thousands of dollars on the secondhand market and required massive studio space. Vintage Keys became an overnight industry standard by packing over 30 iconic vintage keyboards into a single, reliable, 1-unit rack box that cost under 1,000 USD at launch.
