The E-mu Emax II 16-Bit Digital Sound System was a major upgrade to the original Emax sampler, bringing true 16-bit linear PCM sampling to E-mu’s affordable sampler line. Developed by E-mu Systems, it featured improved audio fidelity, expanded memory options, multitimbral operation, and advanced digital filtering based on E-mu’s proprietary synthesis architecture. Designed for professional studios and serious musicians, the Emax II combined high-quality sampling with a relatively accessible workflow, positioning it as a strong competitor to Akai’s S-series samplers in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

The Emax II marked E-mu’s transition from the gritty 12-bit sound of the original Emax to full 16-bit sampling fidelity.

Despite the higher resolution, it retained E-mu’s characteristic analog-style resonant filters, preserving much of the musical shaping capability of earlier models.

It supported disk-based sample storage via 3.5" floppy disks, reflecting the standard workflow of late-1980s sampling systems.

The instrument offered multitimbral capabilities, allowing multiple sampled instruments to be played simultaneously from a single unit.

It was widely used in professional studios for film scoring, television production, and electronic music during the early 1990s.

The Emax II competed directly with Akai’s S1000 and S1100 samplers, which were rapidly becoming industry standards.

It helped solidify E-mu Systems’ reputation as a leader in high-quality digital sampling technology.

Today, it is valued for its early 16-bit sound character combined with E-mu’s distinctive filtering and modulation architecture.
