Kiki KaiKai: Tsukiyo Soushi is a multi-directional scrolling shooter that serves as the second Super Famicom entry in the beloved Kiki KaiKai series. Players control the shrine maiden Pocky or her partner Rocky (the tanuki) as they embark on a quest through folklore-inspired landscapes to stop a new supernatural threat. The game is celebrated for its cooperative gameplay, high difficulty, and beautiful, detailed sprite work that pushes the Super Famicom’s visual capabilities.

TRIVIA

Refining the "Action-Shooter" Formula: While the original Kiki KaiKai (known as Pocky & Rocky) set the standard, Tsukiyo Soushi introduced a unique 'link' mechanic. In co-op mode, players could tether their characters together to perform special moves or share power-ups, drastically changing the tactical flow of combat compared to its predecessor.

The Natsume Polish: Natsume was at the peak of their prowess during this era, and Tsukiyo S?shi is frequently cited as one of the best-looking games on the platform. The attention to detail in the enemy designs—which pull heavily from Japanese y?kai mythology—alongside the parallax-heavy environments, created a deeply immersive atmosphere.

Non-Linear Progression: Unlike many other shooters of the era, the game offers a level of branching path exploration. Players can choose their route through certain areas, adding replayability and allowing them to discover hidden secrets or different versions of stages, which was quite advanced for a run-and-gun title in 1994.
