The IBM 3179 is a color display terminal introduced in 1985 as part of the IBM 3270 terminal family.
Unlike most earlier monochrome terminals, the 3179 supports limited color output, allowing improved visual distinction for business applications running on IBM mainframes.
It retains full compatibility with the 3270 protocol and is used primarily in enterprise environments for data entry, transaction processing, and host-based applications.
Although color-capable, it remains a text-oriented terminal rather than a graphical workstation, representing an incremental evolution of IBM’s terminal technology.
