Magical Spot © 1980 Universal.

A single-screen shoot 'em up that takes a different approach to the game formula than your typical Space Invaders or Galaxian clone of the era.

A giant alien ship called Mothra is launching relentless attacks of scorpion-like creatures upon the Earth. Unlike most games were enemies are single hit fodder, these take two hits to destroy.

As they make their way down the screen there are a number of dots set in rows. Sometimes the creatures will hide, then pop back out again. If enough larvae reach the bottom of the screen, they begin a special attack upon your fighter.

TRIVIA

Released in July 1980 in Japan; October 1980 in the United States.

There is a Magical Spot II that is slightly easier, in that it only requires one hit to kill an enemy as opposed to two. Otherwise, they are the same game.

As was typical of Universal in this era, the cabinet is beautifully detailed in colorful artwork, covering almost the entirety of the cabinet in a way that few other companies did.
