Actual Entry (non editable)
Killer Instinct (c) 1995 Nintendo. Killer Instinct is a high-speed, combo-focused 2D fighting game developed by Rare Ltd. Originally an arcade hit, the SNES port was an impressive technical achievement that brought the game’s unique "Ultra Combo" system and high-fidelity pre-rendered character sprites to the 16-bit console. - TECHNICAL - GAME ID: SNS-AKLE-USA - TRIVIA - The Soundtrack & Packaging: The game was famously bundled with the "Killer Cuts" soundtrack CD, a major promotional move that helped build massive hype. The cartridge itself was molded in a distinct, eye-catching black plastic casing, differentiating it from the standard grey SNES cartridges. Technical Achievement: To fit the massive arcade assets into the SNES hardware, developers utilized a Mode 7 engine for the stage backgrounds and heavy use of data compression. Despite the inevitable loss of some arcade-perfect details, it remains one of the best-selling and most technically accomplished fighters on the system. Gameplay Mechanics: Killer Instinct introduced the "Combo Breaker" system, a strategic counter-measure that allowed players to stop an opponent's massive combo string, and the "Danger" mechanic, which gives a player one last chance to mount a comeback when their health is nearly depleted. - SOURCES - ROM dump (MAME).
