Actual Entry (non editable)
Tales of Phantasia (c) 1995 Namco, Limited. Tales of Phantasia is a landmark action-RPG that launched one of the industry's most enduring series. Set in the sprawling fantasy world of Aselia, the narrative follows Cress Albane and his allies as they traverse time to prevent the demon king Dhaos from destroying their world. The title is technically renowned for its sophisticated use of hardware, pushing the Super Famicom to its limits with high-fidelity sound, sampled voice clips, and a dynamic real-time combat system. - TECHNICAL - GAME ID: SHVC-ATVJ-JPN - TRIVIA - Released on December 15, 1995 in Japan. Development & Publishing: The game was developed by members of the Wolf Team (a subsidiary of Telenet Japan). After a difficult relationship with their parent company, the team sought an external publisher. Following an unsuccessful pitch to Enix, they secured a contract with Namco. Literary Roots: The plot was originally derived from an unpublished novel titled Tale Phantasia, written by the game’s lead programmer, Yoshiharu Gotanda. The world-building blends Norse mythology with science fiction and specific nomenclature drawn from the works of Michael Moorcock and H. P. Lovecraft to appeal to Western fantasy fans. Technical Achievement: To include high-quality voice acting and an opening theme song—rare for a console game at the time—the team developed the "Flexible Voice Drive," a system designed to compress and play audio within the constraints of a 48-megabit cartridge. Linear Motion Battle System (LMBS): The game is credited with introducing the series' signature combat engine. Influenced by the popularity of fighting games in the mid-90s, the developers created an action-oriented battle system that shifted away from the menu-based combat typical of the era's RPGs. The Wolf Team Split: The production was marked by significant internal conflict. During the later stages of development, a large portion of the core development staff resigned from Wolf Team to establish an independent development studio, tri-Ace, which would go on to develop the Star Ocean series. - STAFF - Voices: Takeshi Kusao (Cless Alvein), Satomi Korogi (Mint Adnade), Mika Kanai (Arche Klaine), Kazuhiko Inoue (Klarth F. Lester), Kaneto Shiozawa (Dhaos) Character Designer: Kosuke Fujishima Game Design: Masaki Norimoto Total Programming: Yoshiharu Gotanda Expression Programming: Shigeru Ueki Graphic Design: Yoshiaki Inagaki, Mari Kimura, Yasuyuki Sawadaishi, Takeshi Yabe, Yumiko Nishitani, Takeharu Isogai, Keiichi Goto, Yuji Kanbara Sound Programming: Hiroya Hatsushiba Music Composition: Motoi Sakuraba, Shinji Tamura, Ryota Furuya Solo Piano: Motoi Sakuraba Based on Tale Phantasia written by: Yoshiharu Gotanda Package Designer: Minako Matsuda Sales Promoter: Taku Tsuge, Makoto Yoshizumi, Masaaki Konbe, Yasuhiko Soga, Mitsunori Ikoma, Morikazu Orikasa, Ritsuko Aoyagi Theme Song: Shoko Fujibayashi (Lyrics), Toshiyuki Sekiguchi (Music Composition), Hiroya Hatsushiba (Arrangement), Yukari Yoshida (Singer) Test Player: H.
