Super Mario Collection is a comprehensive compilation that remastered the core Super Mario trilogy from the 8-bit Famicom era, plus the previously Japanese-only Super Mario Bros. 2 (known as The Lost Levels). Utilizing the 16-bit capabilities of the Super Famicom, Nintendo overhauled the graphics, sound, and physics of these classic titles, presenting them on a single cartridge with a battery-backed save system that tracks progress across all four games.

TECHNICAL

GAME ID: SHVC-4M

Technical Specifications: The game utilizes an 8-megabit cartridge with battery-backed SRAM.

TRIVIA

Super Mario Collection was released July 14, 1993 in Japan.

The All-Stars Nomenclature: While known as Super Mario Collection in Japan, the Western release was titled Super Mario All-Stars. This title is a hallmark of early 90s compilation software, setting the standard for how retro games could be "re-packaged" for new hardware rather than just directly emulated.

Clarifying the Series confusion: This title highlights the divergent release history of the Mario franchise. The Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 (often called The Lost Levels in the West) is included here as a direct, harder iteration of the original. Conversely, the Western Super Mario Bros. 2—a rework of Doki Doki Panic—is included here under its original Japanese title: Super Mario USA.

Technical Achievement: This was not a simple emulation port. Nintendo's development teams essentially "re-wrote" these games using the Super Famicom's hardware features. The color palettes were expanded, the sprites were completely redrawn, and the audio was remixed into the SNES's high-fidelity sound chip, creating a seamless aesthetic across the four games.

Nintendo Power Re-release: Following the pattern of many iconic titles, this collection was also released via the Nintendo Power flash cartridge service in Japan on September 30, 1997, ensuring the collection remained available for retail purchase well into the late 90s.
