Actual Entry (non editable)
Super E.D.F. (c) 1991 Jaleco Company, Limited. Super E.D.F. (Earth Defense Force) is an enhanced side-scrolling shooter port of the 1991 arcade original. In this title, players pilot the advanced XA-1 fighter to defend Earth from an alien invasion on the dark side of the Moon. The game is defined by its flexible "satellite" system, which allows players to adjust the formation of two pods—either clustering them for concentrated fire or deploying them for wide-area coverage. Eschewing traditional power-ups, the game utilizes a unique experience-based level-up system where the ship's weapon power and satellite formations evolve as the player destroys enemy waves, retaining progress throughout the game. - TECHNICAL - GAME ID: SHVC-ED BARCODE: 4907859106036 Specifications: The game utilizes an 8-megabit cartridge. - TRIVIA - Released on October 25, 1991 (Friday) in Japan at a retail price of 8,700 JPY. Arcade vs. Console: While Super E.D.F. is a port of the arcade title, it is significantly reworked. Several enemies and elements from the arcade version were removed or redesigned, most notably the large fighters from the first stage and the sub-boss before the second stage's primary guardian. The 'Super' Distinction: The 'Supe' prefix is well-earned, as the port contains a wealth of exclusive content not found in the arcade original. This includes unique stages and an entirely new, exclusive final boss encounter, making it a distinct experience rather than a direct conversion. Weaponry Adjustments: The arcade version allowed for four weapon selections, whereas the Super Famicom version doubles that to eight, offering significantly more strategic variety. However, the technical constraints of the era resulted in the omission of the arcade’s two-player cooperative mode, forcing a single-player focus. Reviews: [FR] November 1991 - Consoles + N.3: 91/100 Export releases: [US] "Earth Defense Force [Model SNS-ED-USA]" - STAFF - Director: Yuki Arai, S.o.H.X Programmer: Papa Sekiya, Dragons V Shirato, Panic Yuma, Oh! Hara Graphic: Catty.N, Bg Tadahiko Sound: Y Takashiba (Zep) Special Thanks: Kazaana, Myau-Kun, Azvear-S (SMDE) - SOURCES - ROM dump (MAME).
