Darius Twin marks the first entry of the legendary Darius side-scrolling shooter series on Nintendo's 16-bit hardware. Unlike its arcade predecessors, this title was developed exclusively for the Super Famicom. It retains the series' hallmark "aquatic-themed" mechanical aesthetic while offering a refined, accessible experience that features a simultaneous two-player mode and a branching level progression system.
GAME ID: SHVC-DT
Darius Twin was released on March 29, 1991 in Japan at a retail price of 8500 JPY.
Taito’s 16-Bit Debut: This title holds the historical distinction of being the very first game published by Taito for the Super Famicom. Its success established Taito's presence on the console, paving the way for later iconic ports and original titles.
Exclusive Design: While many shooters of the era were direct arcade ports, Darius Twin was designed from the ground up for the home console. This allowed the developers to tailor the pacing and difficulty to the Super Famicom’s strengths, resulting in a more focused, albeit slightly more linear, experience compared to the sprawling arcade originals.
Streamlined Branching: True to the Darius tradition, the game features a branching path system. While more limited than the arcade versions (consisting of 12 total rounds across 7 stages with a final convergence at Zone L), it remains a defining element that adds replayability and strategic route planning to the core gameplay.
