Chrono Trigger is widely considered one of the definitive masterpieces of the 16-bit role-playing era. Developed by the "Dream Team"—a collaboration between Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii, and Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama—the game follows the protagonist, Crono, and his companions as they travel through various eras of history to prevent the destruction of the world by the extraterrestrial entity known as Lavos. The title is renowned for its revolutionary non-linear narrative, seamless battle transitions, and profound use of time travel mechanics that influence the game's outcome.

TRIVIA

Released on March 11, 1995 (Saturday) in Japan.

The "Dream Team" Collaboration: The project was notable for bringing together the biggest names in Japanese gaming at the time: Hironobu Sakaguchi (Square), Yuji Horii (Enix), and Akira Toriyama (Bird Studio), alongside musical contributions from Yasunori Mitsuda and Nobuo Uematsu.

Seamless Battle System: Unlike the traditional Final Fantasy games which utilized a jarring screen transition before starting combat, Chrono Trigger battles take place directly on the field map. Enemies are visible, allowing players to avoid or initiate encounters strategically.

Time Travel & Multiple Endings: The core gameplay mechanic involves traveling between distinct historical eras (Prehistoric, Antiquity, Middle Ages, Present, Future, and Apocalypse). Choices made in the past significantly alter the environment and events in the future, leading to over a dozen different possible endings.

New Game+ (NG+): Chrono Trigger was a pioneer of the "New Game+" mode. Upon completing the game, players can restart the adventure while retaining their characters' levels, equipment, and abilities, which is essential for discovering the game's various hidden endings.

Tech/Combo System: Combat utilizes an iteration of the Active Time Battle (ATB) system, expanded to include "Techs" (special moves) and "Double/Triple Techs," allowing characters to combine their individual abilities for devastating coordinated attacks.

There are six unused enemies, five unused items and two unused areas hidden away in the game's code.
