This Japanese release seems to be an updated version of the game, it had a new HUD and some more secrets doors added. There are also some differences in the placement of items and enemies, especially in the first stage.
The main character's name in this Japanese version is Elrond, but in the English version it is Kuros, 'Elrond' is used as a place name (Kingdom of Elrond).
A prototype of this version is known as The Tale - Elrond no Eiyuu.
