The IBM 5100 Portable Computer is one of the earliest portable computers, introduced by IBM in 1975.
It is a self-contained portable system featuring a built-in CRT display, keyboard, tape drive storage, and integrated CPU. The machine is capable of running APL and BASIC programming languages through microcoded emulation of larger IBM systems.
Despite its “portable” designation, the IBM 5100 is a suitcase-sized computer designed for field engineers and scientific users requiring mobility combined with mainframe-compatible computing capabilities.
It represents one of the earliest steps toward modern portable personal computing systems.
