The J-446A is a versatile 486-class motherboard designed during the peak of the VESA Local Bus (VLB) era. It is typically built around the UMC (United Microelectronics Corporation) UM8881/8886 chipset, a very popular and stable Green PC-compliant chipset of the time. The board supports the full range of 486 processors (DX, DX2, DX4) and AMD 5x86 via its Socket 3 interface. It features three VLB slots for high-speed graphics and disk controllers, alongside standard 16-bit ISA slots. Memory support is provided via four 72-pin SIMM sockets, allowing for up to 64 MB or 128 MB of RAM, and it includes a COAST (Cache On A Stick) slot for L2 cache expandability (typically 256 KB).

TRIVIA

The "VLB Survival" Choice: By the time the J-446A was released, the PCI bus was already beginning to take over. However, many power users and specialized businesses still preferred VLB for its cost-to-performance ratio in disk I/O. The J-446A became one of the "last great VLB boards" before the industry fully standardized on PCI.

Green PC Compliance: The J-446A was marketed as a Green motherboard. This meant it included early power management features (APM), such as the ability to spin down hard drives or throttle the CPU after a period of inactivity—a feature that was highly attractive for office environments concerned about electricity bills.
