ISA-486 (c) 1990 Asus Released around 1990, the ISA-486 was born from ASUS's internal R&D efforts. At the time, ASUS was a young company without early access to Intel's confidential processor specifications. By reverse-engineering and analyzing Intel’s existing chipsets, ASUS engineers developed approximately 150 custom integrated circuits to create a working 486-compatible platform. This achievement occurred simultaneously with IBM's own internal efforts and notably ahead of almost every other Taiwanese competitor, effectively launching ASUS onto the global stage. - TRIVIA - The "Zero-Access" Miracle: Because ASUS did not have official support from Intel, the ISA-486 is considered a masterpiece of "black-box" engineering. Intel was so impressed—or perhaps surprised—that they subsequently entered into a partnership with ASUS, which solidified the manufacturer's trajectory. Collector's Item: Early versions of this board are incredibly rare today. Many carry unique serial numbers, as they were produced in limited quantities during the company's fledgling years.
