The GA-486VF is a VESA Local Bus (VLB) motherboard built around the SiS 85C471 chipset (or in some later revisions, the SiS 85C491). It is defined by its compact layout and its attempt to integrate more "onboard" features that previously required expansion cards. It was a very popular choice for home users transitioning from a 386 to a 486, as it offered a stable, well-documented platform that didn't require the complex "pro-level" tuning of the VS series.

TRIVIA

The "F" Suffix: In Gigabyte's numbering scheme, the "F" usually denoted Fast or "Flexible," but in the mid-90s, it effectively came to mean "Fast-I/O." These boards were among the first to feature onboard floppy and IDE headers as standard, rather than as separate VLB I/O cards, which reduced the clutter in the case and improved reliability.

The "SiS" Dominance: This board is a perfect example of why the SiS 85C471 was the dominant chipset of the era. It was incredibly forgiving with mismatched RAM speeds, a common issue when home users would recycle old SIMMs from their previous 386 machines.
