The Korg M1 EX Music Workstation was an expanded version of the groundbreaking Korg M1, one of the first fully integrated digital workstation synthesizers. Developed by Korg Inc., it combined PCM-based sample playback, digital filters, effects processing, and a built-in sequencer in a single instrument. The “EX” version increased waveform memory and preset content, making it even more versatile for studio production, live performance, and MIDI sequencing workflows.
The M1 EX is an enhanced revision of the original Korg M1, which is widely considered one of the most influential workstation synthesizers ever made.
It used PCM multisamples combined with digital subtractive synthesis, allowing realistic instrument emulation and synthetic textures in the same system.
The EX version expanded waveform ROM and preset memory, giving users a larger sound palette out of the box.
It included built-in digital effects (reverb, delay, chorus), which became a defining part of its sound.
The M1 series helped define the “workstation” concept, integrating synthesis, sequencing, and effects into one device.
It was heavily used in late-1980s and early-1990s pop, house, film scoring, and TV music production.
The famous “M1 Piano” and “Organ” sounds became iconic presets widely recognized in popular music.
Today, the M1 EX is considered a cornerstone of digital music production history and a key instrument in the transition to workstation-based studios.
