Built around a Headland or OPTi core logic chipset, its defining feature is the inclusion of two VESA Local Bus (VLB) expansion slots alongside five standard 16-bit ISA slots, providing a massive bandwidth upgrade for high-speed graphics cards and hard drive controllers. System memory configuration features a mix of four 30-pin SIMM sockets and two 72-pin SIMM sockets, allowing versatile RAM upgrades.
The "Fake Cache" Controversy: The Hippo VL+ features a prominent DCA (Direct Cache Architecture) silk-screened logo on the PCB. However, hardware preservationists discovered that the board lacks physical L2 SRAM cache sockets or actual external cache controllers, relying solely on the chipset's internal write buffers. Octek used the DCA marketing term to present it as a premium feature, making it a famous entry in retro-computing history discussions regarding budget motherboard workarounds.
EDRAM Support: Despite lacking standard L2 cache, the design was engineered to potentially leverage specialized EDRAM (Enhanced DRAM) modules in its primary memory slots—fast DRAM chips combined with a tiny internal SRAM cache slice—to regain performance margins under heavy DOS multi-tasking workloads.
