EISA Enterprise-II (c) 199? AMI [American Megatrends, Inc.] The Enterprise-II is a pioneering, full-sized AT motherboard that was one of the first to implement the EISA bus specification. Unlike the later Enterprise-III/IV, which balanced multiple buses (VLB/PCI), the Enterprise-II was almost entirely EISA-focused. It was the board that convinced many early 1990s system integrators that 32-bit bus-mastering was the future of high-end computing, even if it meant abandoning the simple "plug-and-play" nature of standard ISA. - TECHNICAL - Chipset: Original AMI "Enterprise" chipset (pre-dating the more refined logic found in the III and IV). CPU Support: Socket 3 (primarily designed for 486DX, with support for the early 486DX2s). Expansion: 8x EISA slots (standard 32-bit bus-mastering slots). It was notoriously devoid of VLB or PCI slots, relying entirely on the EISA bus for all high-speed I/O. Memory: 8x 30-pin SIMM sockets (typically restricted to 64 MB maximum, which was enormous at the time). Form Factor: Full-size AT, featuring a very distinct layout that often required "tower" cases to accommodate the large number of EISA cards. - TRIVIA - The "32-Bit" Pioneer: This board was the proving ground for AMI’s EISA BIOS code. If you were running an early Unix or Novell NetWare server in 1991, there is a very high probability it was running on an Enterprise-II. The EISA "Pain": This board is famous for its requirement of the !AMI0000.CFG (and related) setup files. If you didn't have the specific setup floppy, you couldn't configure the motherboard's IRQ routing.
