The AMI Mark V "Baby Screamer" is a high-performance 80486 ISA motherboard designed by American Megatrends Inc. (AMI) in 1991. Renowned for its industrial-grade stability and aggressive performance, the mainboard was engineered as a platform-reference for the 486 architecture. It utilizes a custom AMI-designed chipset cluster, specifically optimized for high-speed cache management and zero-wait-state memory access. The board features a 237-pin PGA Socket 3 for the 486DX/DX2 CPU, paired with an 80387-compatible math co-processor slot. Its expansion is entirely ISA-based, featuring eight 16-bit ISA slots. Memory capacity is provided by eight 30-pin SIMM sockets (supporting up to 32 MB of FPM DRAM), backed by a massive (for the time) high-speed L2 static cache (SRAM) array, configurable up to 256 KB.

The Screamer Reputation: The "Baby Screamer" was one of the first 486 motherboards to consistently hit "zero wait states" during burst-mode memory cycles. At a time when competitors were struggling to keep the 486 fed with data, AMI’s proprietary cache controller implementation allowed the CPU to run virtually without stalling, earning it the Screamer nickname in industry magazines like PC Magazine and Byte.

The Proprietary Chipset: Unlike most clone makers who relied on generic UMC, SiS, or OPTi chipsets, AMI built their own custom gate-array logic for the Mark V. This meant that the "amibaby" set in MAME is unique; it doesn't share register-level code with other 486 sets because the logic gates and memory-mapping registers are entirely native to AMI’s internal design.
