The Roland CM-32P was a compact MIDI sound module designed for computer-based music production, sequencing, and multimedia applications. Manufactured by Roland Corporation, it formed part of Roland's CM (Computer Music) series and was based on PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) sample playback technology. Unlike the LA synthesis found in the CM-32L and MT-32, the CM-32P focused entirely on high-quality sampled instrument reproduction, offering a broad selection of realistic sounds including pianos, strings, brass, and percussion. Its General MIDI-like versatility made it suitable for early home studios, educational systems, and computer music setups at the end of the 1980s.

The CM-32P was Roland’s first major step toward fully sample-based PCM sound modules, moving away from hybrid LA synthesis used in earlier products like the MT-32.

It was designed to complement other modules in the CM series, particularly the CM-32L, which specialized in LA synthesis and sound effects.

Although released before the official General MIDI standard (1991), the CM-32P anticipated many of its principles by offering a more standardized and realistic instrument set.

The module was commonly used in early PC music setups, where it provided far more realistic instrument playback than FM synthesis sound cards of the time.

Its sound library included basic acoustic instruments intended for sequencing rather than cinematic or experimental sound design, reflecting its “workstation utility” focus.

The CM-32P contributed to the transition period between early MIDI modules and later fully standardized General MIDI sound modules in the early 1990s.

It was often paired with other Roland CM units in multi-module setups to cover both synthesized and realistic PCM-based sound domains.

Today, the CM-32P is considered an important stepping stone in Roland’s evolution toward fully sample-based sound engines used in later JV-series synthesizers.
