This is an exclusive release to the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. It is the first release developed by 'Team Infinity' alongside Andamiro. The game engine is a heavily modified version of Stepmania 5.
Pump It Up Infinity is not a sequel to Pump It Up Pro, but is a reboot of the original idea. This is uniquely geared to audiences in North America and the United Kingdom. The PRO series was developed by a few members of the same studio that created In The Groove, while Infinity is handled by Andamiro. Infinity's development will continue post release, and new USB updates will provide new content that did not exist on the initial version.
Pump It Up Infinity is the first Pump It Up game to offer two different timing windows. "Classic Mode" keeps traditional timing windows, while "PRO Mode" tightens the window to make it comparable to In The Groove. A player's game mode settings can be configured and saved by a USB pen drive.
The game was presented for the first time at the Amusement Expo 2012 in Las Vegas. It was then released in January 2013.
