Winning Post is the inaugural entry in the long-running thoroughbred horse racing simulation franchise. Originally released earlier that year for the PC-98 (Winning Post [Model KN10381010]), this port brings the intricate management systems of the PC version to the 16-bit console. Players assume the role of an owner-breeder, managing stables, breeding horses, and navigating the nuances of the Japanese horse racing circuit to build a successful racing dynasty.

Released on September 10, 1993 (Friday) in Japan.
The Franchise Foundation: This title marked the beginning of Koei’s flagship horse racing series, produced under the guidance of Koei founder Yoichi Erikawa (using his pseudonym, Kou Shibusawa). It established the core gameplay loop that the series would refine for decades: a balance of stable management, genetic pedigree analysis, and jockey tactics.
A Pure Simulation: Unlike more arcade-focused horse racing games of the time, Winning Post focused on the behind-the-scenes realism of the sport. It required players to monitor horse health, bloodlines, and training regimens. The races themselves were automated events where the outcome was determined by the horse’s stats, conditioning, and the strategic instructions given to the jockey before the race.
Technical Adaptation: As a port of a PC-98 title, the interface was adapted to use the Super Famicom controller's D-pad and buttons to navigate menus that were originally designed for a mouse-and-keyboard PC environment. This successful transition helped Koei prove that their complex simulation engines were viable on home consoles.
Series Legacy: Recognized by many as a pioneer of the "management simulation" genre in Japan, the success of this first title led to numerous sequels and spin-offs across multiple hardware generations, eventually solidifying it as a cultural staple in Japanese gaming.
