Super Game Boy 2 © 1998 Nintendo Company, Limited.
The Super Game Boy 2 is the refined successor to the original peripheral. While it retains the core "Game Boy on a chip" architecture of the first model, it introduces critical hardware corrections and feature updates that addressed the limitations of the 1994 release. Most notably, it includes a dedicated communication port, allowing for authentic link cable multiplayer—a feature that was impossible on the original unit.
GAME ID: SHVC-042
Released on January 30, 1998 in japan.
Japan Exclusivity: The Super Game Boy 2 was never released outside of Japan. Despite the continued popularity of the Super Famicom and Game Boy in North America and Europe, the peripheral remained a regional exclusive, making it a highly prized item for international collectors and historians.
The Communication Port: The most significant addition to the Super Game Boy 2 was the external Link Cable port on the side of the cartridge. This allowed the unit to interact with other Game Boy systems or another Super Game Boy 2, enabling multiplayer trades and battles (e.g., Pokémon) that were previously locked to the handheld hardware.
Clock Speed Correction: The original Super Game Boy suffered from a known technical quirk: its internal clock crystal caused the emulation to run approximately 2.4% faster than the actual Game Boy hardware. This led to subtle audio pitch shifts and desynchronization in certain games. The Super Game Boy 2 corrected this, aligning the clock speed to match the original handhelds precisely.
The LED Indicator: Unlike the original model, which lacked a power/link indicator, the Super Game Boy 2 includes a red power LED (which turns green during data transfer), providing immediate visual feedback for the user.
