Power Athlete is a 2D fighting game that attempted to differentiate itself from the growing field of Street Fighter II clones by introducing a large-scale, multi-plane movement system. Players can dodge attacks by moving into the foreground or background, a mechanic that added a layer of tactical depth to the traditional fighting game formula. While technically ambitious for 1992, it remains a notable example of Kaneko’s experimentation with 16-bit arcade hardware and console porting.

The "Kaneko" Style: Kaneko was well-known for their eccentric arcade design philosophy, and Power Athlete is no exception. Its character designs and stage backgrounds are markedly different from the more grounded aesthetic of Capcom or SNK fighters of the era, leaning into a more stylized, sometimes surreal visual tone.
Tactical Innovation: The ability to move in and out of the depth of the screen was an attempt to evolve the side-scrolling brawler/fighter hybrid. While it didn't set a lasting industry standard for competitive fighting games, it provided a distinct experience for home console players who were looking for something different from the standard 2D plane combat.
Porting History: Power Athlete is a direct port of Kaneko's arcade title. The challenge for the developers was translating the arcade's complex sprite-scaling and background-scrolling capabilities to the Super Famicom, which led to some impressive visual effects but also some well-documented slowdown during intense, high-action combat.
