Genocide 2 (or G2) is a side-scrolling action title that serves as the sequel to the original Genocide, which gained a cult following on platforms like the PC-Engine, FM Towns, and Sharp X68000. Set in the year 2280, players control the bionic soldier Jeff Hazard, who pilots the "Tracer Type 184" (codenamed Goliath), a sophisticated mecha, to investigate the mysterious and dangerous CONEX corporation.
GAME ID: SHVC-2I
Released on August 5, 1994 (Friday) in Japan at a retail price of 9,800 JPY.
Combat Mechanics: The game functions with beat-'em-up sensibilities: stages are partitioned into distinct sub-areas, and players must defeat every enemy present to "clear" the zone and unlock the path forward. Combat centers on Goliath’s plasma-saber for close-quarters strikes.
Tactical Depth: A standout feature is "Betty," a floating support sphere that accompanies the player and provides automated fire support. Because Betty and other secondary tools (such as shields and laser guns) rely on a finite energy supply, players must balance aggressive attacks with resource management to avoid being left defenseless.
Platform Origins & Differences: Genocide 2 was originally developed for the Sharp X68000 and FM Towns computer systems. While the Super Famicom version adapts this experience, the original computer releases ran at a higher internal resolution and featured more detailed sprite work and smoother animation frames.
Design Variations: Beyond the visual differences inherent in the hardware port, the Super Famicom version features distinct stage layouts compared to the original computer releases, making it a unique iteration of the Genocide experience.
