46 Okunen Monogatari is a side-scrolling action RPG with an evolution-based progression system.

The player controls a creature that evolves across several geological eras, beginning as a primitive aquatic life form and eventually reaching the human stage. Each era presents specific objectives related to survival and the balance between species, requiring the player to overcome dominant predators before advancing.

The game is structured around two main phases: an overworld map used to select stages, and side-scrolling action sequences where gameplay takes place. During these stages, the player encounters various life forms, which may provide information, trigger events, or act as enemies.

Progression is based on the accumulation of Evolution Points (AP), obtained by defeating other creatures. These points can be used to modify different parts of the character’s body, including offensive and defensive attributes such as jaws, limbs, and overall body structure. Additional items, such as crystals, can enhance the rate of evolution.

The gameplay is non-linear, allowing for multiple evolutionary paths depending on the player’s choices. These variations influence both the creature’s abilities and the overall progression. The game also includes a feature allowing evolved creatures to be saved and stored.

TRIVIA

46 Okunen Monogatari was released on December 21, 1992 (Monday) in Japan at a retail price of 9,600 JPY.

The title of this game translates from Japanese as "4.6 Billion Year Story To Distant Eden".

The Predecessor: The game is a direct spiritual successor to the 1990 PC-9801 title 46 Okunen Monogatari ~The Shinka Ron~ (4.6 Billion Year Story: The Theory of Evolution). While the SNES version is a side-scrolling platformer, the original PC-9801 game featured a top-down perspective and played more like a traditional RPG.

A Creation Mythos: Despite the scientific premise of evolution, the game’s narrative is heavily steeped in mythology. The player’s journey is overseen by Gaia, the personification of the Earth and daughter of the Sun, who is looking for a partner to join her in the paradise realm of Eden.

The Mars Intervention: In a bizarre twist towards the end of the game, it is revealed that the mysterious, growth-accelerating crystals causing chaos across the eras were not a natural phenomenon, but were actually sent to Earth by an advanced civilization on Mars in a misguided attempt to help the planet’s development.

The Book of Life: A standout feature for the time was the "Book of Life," which allowed players to save up to 50 different creature designs. This encouraged experimentation with the evolution system, as players could jump back and forth between different builds to tackle specific bosses or areas.

Hidden Boss Lore: The game's final antagonist, "Bolbox," is revealed to be a gigantic, single-celled organism that has mutated into a malevolent, high-intelligence being. It ironically views itself as the first "human," despite being the exact opposite of complex, multicellular life.

TIPS AND TRICKS
Human body:
After becoming a mammal, evolve the cat jaws and rabbit body. Then, select the Ramopithecus body. It will become human after two more evolutions.

Mermaid body:
Accumulate 10,000 evolution points by the final ocean stage of Chapter 5. Select Hand and Feet when evolving your character, then select the Try To Evolve option. Continue to evolve three times to become a Mermaid.

Easy HP:
Even the smallest evolution will max out your HP. Shortening/lengthening your neck or changing the size of your body when low on HP will enable you to defeat every Boss easily.

If you evolve a part of your body, your HP resets to its maximum. A good thing to evolve is a horn or something cheap. You will also get more EVO points after killing the Boss.
