Choujikuu Yousai Macross is a fast-paced side-scrolling shooter inspired by the iconic anime series, known in the West as The Super Dimension Fortress Macross. Players pilot the versatile VF-1 Valkyrie fighter, battling waves of Zentradi forces across increasingly challenging missions.

Each level unfolds in three distinct phases. It begins in outer space, where players fend off relentless swarms of enemy ships. Next, a massive Zentradi warship dominates the screen, unleashing heavy fire from enemy units and turrets. In the final phase, the Valkyrie infiltrates the ship itself, racing against time to destroy its heavily shielded reactor core. Once the ship is obliterated, the mission advances, introducing an even more formidable enemy vessel.

True to the anime, the VF-1 Valkyrie can transform between three modes. Fighter mode offers high speed but limited maneuverability and no rapid fire. Gerwalk mode strikes a balance with agility and rapid-fire capability. Battroid mode excels in combat versatility, allowing backward shooting while maintaining strong mobility on screen.

Players can also deploy a limited number of special attacks, including powerful homing missile barrages. Throughout the game, collectible items appear randomly, granting benefits such as extra lives (F), enhanced shields (P), bonus points (B), and additional homing missiles (M).
