The Alesis MIDIverb was one of the first affordable digital effects processors to bring studio-quality reverberation and MIDI-controllable effects to home and project studios. Developed by Alesis, it offered 16-bit digital signal processing (with earlier converter stages depending on revision), 63 preset reverb and spatial effects, and basic MIDI program change capability for remote preset switching. The MIDIverb became a landmark product that helped establish Alesis as a major force in low-cost professional audio gear.
The MIDIverb was introduced in 1986 as part of Alesis’ first major wave of digital studio processors, alongside the XT Reverb.
It was among the first widely available sub-$1000 digital reverb units, making professional-quality effects accessible to home studios.
The unit provided 63 fixed effect programs, including halls, rooms, plates, gated reverbs, reverse-style effects, delays, and stereo spatial enhancements.
Unlike later multi-effects processors, it had no deep parameter editing, focusing instead on preset selection for simplicity and reliability.
The “MIDI” in MIDIverb referred mainly to remote preset switching via MIDI program change messages, not full parameter automation.
It played a key role in defining the “budget digital studio revolution” of the mid-to-late 1980s.
The MIDIverb shared technological DNA with early Alesis products designed by Keith Barr, leveraging custom DSP design to reduce cost dramatically compared to competitors like Lexicon.
It became extremely common in early project studios, often used as the main reverb source for entire productions.
The success of the MIDIverb directly helped fund and justify later Alesis breakthroughs such as the HR-16 drum machine and ADAT digital recording system.
Despite its simplicity, many of its reverb algorithms are still praised today for their characteristic early-digital “grainy spaciousness.”
