The ASI MB-4D33/50NR is a high-performance, mid-generation Socket 3 VESA Local Bus (VLB) Baby AT motherboard manufactured by ASI around 1993. Built to meet the increasing graphical demands of the early 90s, the mainboard is centered around the Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) 85C471 core logic chipset. The mainboard hosts a 237-pin Socket 3 footprint, providing native support for the Intel i486DX, DX2, and compatible processors running at synchronous Front-Side Bus (FSB) speeds of 33 MHz or 50 MHz (the latter being a distinct selling point for this "NR" model). Its peripheral expansion environment is heavily optimized for the VLB era, featuring two 32-bit VESA Local Bus (VLB) slots for high-speed video/disk controllers, alongside seven 16-bit ISA slots. Memory management supports up to 64 MB of Fast Page Mode (FPM) DRAM across four 72-pin SIMM sockets, supplemented by an expandable socketed L2 secondary static cache (SRAM) matrix configurable up to 256 KB.
The "NR" Significance: The "NR" (often interpreted as "New Revision" or "Non-Buffered" depending on the specific PCB batch) designation in the model name refers to the refined trace design for the VLB slots. Early VLB implementations often suffered from signal degradation (noise) when multiple cards were used. The MB-4D33/50NR introduced improved ground planes specifically for the VLB headers, making it far more stable than the generic clones of the time when running a VLB VGA card alongside a VLB IDE controller.
The 50 MHz FSB Challenge: While the board was marketed as 50 MHz-capable, achieving this was difficult with standard 486DX chips. It required extremely fast FPM DRAM (60ns) and high-quality ceramic-package cache chips. For many users, this "50 MHz" rating was the ultimate test of the system's overall cooling and component quality.
