Pro/Cussion Maximum Percussion Module © 1991 E-mu Systems.
The E-mu Pro/Cussion was a dedicated rackmount percussion sound module designed for professional drum programming and electronic music production. Developed by E-mu Systems, it was based on the Proteus architecture and used 4 MB of 16-bit samples derived from the Emulator III library. The unit provided 32-voice polyphony, 16-part multitimbrality, and extensive drum kit editing capabilities, allowing users to layer, stack, and re-map percussion sounds across MIDI notes for highly customizable rhythm programming.
The Pro/Cussion is part of E-mu’s early Proteus-family expansion strategy, focusing on specialized sound modules rather than general-purpose synthesis.
It contains approximately 4 MB of ROM with hundreds of percussion samples, including acoustic drums, electronic kits, and tuned percussion.
It offers 32-voice polyphony and 16-part multitimbrality, enabling complex layered drum sequencing in MIDI setups.
Sounds are organized into kits and zones, allowing each drum to be mapped across the keyboard or drum pads with flexible assignment rules.
Each kit can include up to 24 zones per setup, with deep editing of tuning, panning, and velocity response.
A key feature is the ability to create “Stacks” (layered percussion sounds), combining up to multiple samples per trigger for complex textures.
Unlike many drum modules of its time, it focuses on sound design flexibility rather than fixed preset drum kits.
It was widely used in early 1990s electronic, industrial, and hip-hop production, competing with units like the Alesis D4 and Roland R-series drum modules.
The sound library is largely derived from the Emulator III sampler library, giving it high-quality, studio-grade samples.
Despite being percussion-focused, it remains fully multitimbral across 16 MIDI channels, allowing integration into full sequencing setups.
It helped establish E-mu’s reputation for high-impact, punchy digital drum sounds in rack modules.
