The Yamaha MU128 was a flagship XG tone generator designed for professional MIDI production, computer-based sequencing, and studio integration. Developed by Yamaha Corporation, it used AWM2 sample-based synthesis and provided up to 64-part multitimbrality with 128-voice polyphony. It expanded significantly over the MU100 series, adding three PLG expansion slots, a larger chassis, and enhanced effects and voice architecture, making it one of the most powerful hardware MIDI modules of its era.

The MU128 is the direct successor to the MU100/MU100R, doubling key performance specs such as polyphony and multitimbrality.

It supports 128-note polyphony and 64-part multitimbrality, enabling extremely dense MIDI orchestration.

It contains a large ROM with about 1340+ instrument voices and 47 drum kits depending on mode.

It is part of Yamaha’s XG Level 3 generation, extending the earlier GM/XG standards to much higher polyphony and part counts.

It features three PLG expansion slots, allowing FM, physical modeling, or vocal synthesis boards to be added.

Unlike the MU100, the MU128 is a 2U-high half-rack module, giving space for expansion hardware and improved front-panel control.

It supports multiple modes: XG, TG300B, and Performance mode, allowing both GM compatibility and layered sound design.

It includes advanced multi-effects processing (reverb, chorus, variation, insertion effects, EQ), making it usable as a studio sound engine rather than just a GM player.

It was widely used in late-1990s MIDI studios and DAW setups, especially before software instruments became dominant.

The MU128 is often considered the peak of Yamaha’s hardware XG ecosystem before the MU2000/MU1000 transition toward hybrid workstation concepts.
