The Yamaha MU1000 was a high-end XG tone generator designed for professional MIDI production, computer music systems, and studio integration. Developed by Yamaha, it used AWM2 sample-based synthesis and provided up to 64-part multitimbrality with 128-voice polyphony. It was essentially a streamlined version of the flagship MU2000, sharing the same core sound engine but omitting features such as the built-in sampler and SmartMedia storage.
The MU1000 is part of Yamaha’s late MU-series “flagship generation”, alongside the MU128 and MU2000.
It supports 64-part multitimbrality and 128-note polyphony, allowing very large MIDI arrangements to be played from a single module.
It is effectively a “stripped-down MU2000”, keeping the same core tone generator and PLG expansion capability.
It supports GM, XG, and GM2 compatibility modes, making it suitable for a wide range of MIDI file standards.
Unlike the MU2000, it removes the built-in sampler and SmartMedia slot, focusing purely on tone generation and expansion.
It supports USB connectivity, making it more integrated with late-1990s computer-based DAWs than earlier MU models.
It includes optical digital output, allowing direct digital recording into studio equipment without analog conversion.
It supports up to 3 PLG expansion boards, allowing additional synthesis engines (FM, physical modeling, etc.).
It was often paired with software sequencers on Windows and Mac, serving as a dedicated external sound engine for early DAWs.
The MU1000 marks the transition of the MU series toward a more computer-integrated studio architecture before the line ended around 2000.
