The Octek XT-286 is a highly unique hybrid clone motherboard produced in the late 1980s. Designed as a cost-effective upgrade board for existing XT computer chassis, it features eight 8-bit ISA expansion slots, an 8-switch configuration DIP block identical to standard XT motherboards, and a layout that omits traditional AT features like an 80287 math co-processor socket. The board allows users to run software requiring 286 instructions while operating within a compact, legacy XT hardware environment.
True XT Clone Behavior: Unlike IBM's own XT 286 (Model 5162)—which used a 16-bit AT-class motherboard stuffed inside an XT case— the Octek board is a literal XT clone at its core, relying on standard XT-style power supply connectors and hardware initialization procedures.
