The MITAC MBA-029 is a professional-grade, Socket 3 VESA Local Bus (VLB) Baby AT motherboard engineered by Mitac International Corp. around 1993 to 1994. Built to serve the corporate workstation and office automation market, the board is centered around the Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) 85C471 core logic chipset. The mainboard hosts a 237-pin Socket 3, providing robust support for the Intel 486DX, DX2, and compatible AMD/Cyrix processors, running on synchronous Front-Side Bus (FSB) speeds of 25 MHz, 33 MHz, or 40 MHz. Its peripheral expansion infrastructure features a classic VLB/ISA hybrid layout: two high-speed 32-bit VESA Local Bus (VLB) slots for performance video/storage and seven 16-bit ISA slots for legacy expansion cards. Memory management uses four 72-pin SIMM sockets (a transition from 30-pin standards), supporting up to 128 MB of Fast Page Mode (FPM) DRAM, backed by an integrated, socketed L2 secondary static cache (SRAM) matrix configurable up to 512 KB.

The "Industrial Heritage" Design: Unlike white-label clone boards found in hobbyist shops, MITAC manufactured the MBA-029 with thick, multi-layer copper PCB routing designed to withstand long-term heat exposure. This made the board a favorite for systems kept in "server" roles, such as small-business BBS (Bulletin Board System) hosts or early proprietary point-of-sale terminals, where downtime was unacceptable.

The SiS 85C471 Integration: Mitac was one of the few manufacturers that heavily tuned the SiS 85C471 BIOS timings. The MBA-029 BIOS includes specific "Aggressive Memory" settings that, when enabled, squeeze an extra 2-3% in memory bandwidth over generic boards using the same chipset, though this required the use of high-quality, high-speed 60ns FPM SIMMs.
