The Yamaha AN1x Control Synthesizer is a virtual analog (DSP-based) synthesizer.
It is a 10-voice polyphonic instrument featuring two oscillators per voice, capable of generating a wide range of analog-style waveforms including saw, pulse width modulation, sync, FM-style modulation, noise, and ring modulation. The sound engine is based on subtractive synthesis with a resonant multi-mode filter and dual envelope generators per voice.
The AN1x is designed around a dual 'Scene' architecture, allowing two independent sound setups to be layered or split across the keyboard, or morphed in real time for evolving textures. Each Scene can be controlled independently and stored as part of a patch.
A defining characteristic of the instrument is its emphasis on real-time performance control. It features a modulation wheel, pitch bend, a ribbon controller, and eight assignable real-time control knobs, all of which can be mapped to multiple synthesis parameters. This system reflects Yamaha's 'Control Synthesizer' concept, focusing on expressive performance rather than deep front-panel editing.
The instrument also includes an arpeggiator and a 16-step sequencer, both of which can be synchronized via MIDI and used for pattern generation and modulation control.
The AN1x offers full MIDI implementation, velocity and channel aftertouch sensitivity, and extensive modulation routing capabilities. Despite its complex synthesis engine, sound editing is primarily matrix-based, using a combination of menu navigation and assignable controls rather than dedicated knobs per parameter.
The synthesizer was part of Yamaha’s early virtual analog generation, alongside competing instruments such as the Roland JP-8000 and Clavia Nord Lead series.
