The Elektron Machinedrum SPS-1 MKII was an updated version of the original Machinedrum digital drum machine, designed for advanced rhythm programming, sound synthesis, and live performance sequencing. Developed by Elektron Music Machines, it combined multiple digital synthesis engines with a powerful step sequencer, allowing users to create both classic drum machine emulations and highly experimental electronic percussion. The MKII revision improved hardware design, expanded sequencing resolution, and refined the workflow for studio and live use.
The Machinedrum SPS-1 MKII is part of the second-generation revision of the original 2001 Machinedrum platform.
It uses multiple synthesis engines (TRX, EFM, E12, PI), each designed for different drum synthesis approaches such as analog modeling, FM percussion, sample-based drum sounds, and physical modeling.
The sequencer supports parameter locks, allowing per-step modulation of virtually any sound parameter, a defining feature of Elektron instruments.
The MKII revision improved the hardware layout and expanded sequencing capabilities compared to the original SPS-1.
It offers 16-track sequencing and is capable of both drum programming and melodic or MIDI sequencing of external gear.
Two main hardware branches exist: standard MKII and UW (User Wave) versions, with the latter adding sampling capability.
The UW+ MKII extended memory and pattern/snapshot storage significantly, making it more suitable for complex live performance setups.
It includes extensive onboard digital effects per track and master processing such as delay, reverb, distortion, filtering, and EQ shaping.
The Machinedrum became one of the defining instruments of Elektron’s workflow philosophy, influencing later machines like the Monomachine and Octatrack.
Despite its digital nature, it is often praised for its “raw” and “punchy” character, especially in electronic and experimental music scenes.
Production of the Machinedrum line was eventually discontinued in the mid-2010s, making it a sought-after classic in electronic music hardware history.
