The Super Bass Station is an enhanced, rackmount evolution of the original 1993 keyboard. It was engineered to conquer the high-demand electronic dance music market of the late 1990s, offering producers a dedicated, 100% analog synth engine specialized in delivering bone-crushing sub-bass lines, aggressive lead patches, and Roland TB-303-style squelches within a compact studio footprint.
The synthesis core of the Super Bass Station is entirely analog, monophonic, and highly versatile. It features 2 main oscillators capable of generating sharp sawtooth or variable pulse (square) waves, paired with a newly integrated Sub-Oscillator that drops one or two octaves below Oscillator 1 to lock in chest-rattling low-end stability. The signal routes through a resonant, selectable 12 dB (2-pole) or 24 dB (4-pole) low-pass filter section. The module also boasts dual LFOs, twin ADSR envelope generators, and built-in, true analog overdrive and chorus effects processors to smear and fatten up the output stage.
Housed in a slim, dark grey 1U rackmount chassis with Novation’s signature light-blue accents, the unit balances micro-potentiometer control dials with a central numeric keypad and a bright, 2-digit red LED program display. Patch management is robust, supporting 200 factory presets and 50 user-rewritable memory locations. Connectivity on the rear panel is exceptionally dense for its size, offering complete MIDI In/Out/Thru channels alongside built-in, highly responsive CV/Gate-to-MIDI converter utilities.
The Ultimate 303 Clone Plus Sub: While Novation heavily targeted the Acid House crowd by modeling the filter's resonance characteristics after the Roland TB-303, the inclusion of the dedicated square-wave Sub-Oscillator changed the game entirely. It gave the Super Bass Station a massive, heavy low-frequency foundation that an original 303 could never naturally achieve, making it a staple tool for Drum and Bass, Trip-Hop, and UK Hardcore production.
A Hidden MIDI-to-CV Converter: Novation included a highly useful studio bonus by equipping the hardware with an onboard MIDI-to-CV/Gate Interface. Producers could route digital note data from a computer sequencer into the Super Bass Station's MIDI In port, and the unit would instantly translate those notes into analog electrical voltages through its rear CV/Gate output jacks, allowing it to act as a master control hub for legacy pre-MIDI vintage synthesizers.
Analog Core, Digital Controls: Although the entire audio generation path, filter, and overdrive distortion circuits are completely analog, the pot adjustments and envelope trigger coordinates are scanned by a digital microprocessor. This hybrid control setup allowed the Super Bass Station to achieve full MIDI CC automation compatibility—meaning every single rotary dial tweak on the physical faceplate could be recorded into and played back from a digital software sequencer in real-time.
The Dual LFO Sync Hack: The Super Bass Station upgraded the original keyboard design by deploying two independent Low-Frequency Oscillators. LFO 1 handles traditional cyclic pitch and filter cutoff modulations, while LFO 2 can be locked specifically to key-trigger sync or routed to modulate the pulse-width of the oscillators. This architecture allowed sound designers to create complex, syncopated, evolving PWM pad-leads and automated "wobble" bass patches long before virtual analog plugins dominated the landscape.
