The VFX-SD is a powerful, integrated 61-key music workstation. It arrived as a major, rapid upgrade to the original standard VFX synthesizer released earlier that same year, specifically expanding the platform into a self-contained, high-end "production studio" by integrating a hardware sequencer and a floppy disk drive.
The sonic heart of the VFX-SD is Ensoniq's proprietary Wavetable synthesis engine, driven by their custom OTIS and ESP (Ensoniq Signal Processor) microchips. It features 21-voice polyphony and a 12-part multi-timbral layout. Rather than relying purely on static samples, the VFX-SD allows users to morph and modulate between up to six digital acoustic or synthetic waveforms per patch in real-time. Sound shaping is handled by dual digital multi-mode filters, three 11-stage envelope generators, and an exceptionally versatile modulation matrix.
The defining "SD" moniker stands for Sequencer and Disk. To earn this label, Ensoniq built a highly sophisticated 24-track MIDI sequencer directly into the OS, capable of storing up to 25,000 notes internally. To manage this data and load external sound expansion libraries, a physical 3.5-inch double-density floppy disk drive was built into the left cheek block of the keyboard chassis. The user interface features a bright, high-visibility vacuum fluorescent display (VFD) and Ensoniq's iconic, highly tactile plastic button matrix.
The "SD" Calibration Fix: The original, non-sequenced VFX (1989) was notorious for a severe physical design flaw where the internal ribbon cables connecting the dual keyboard contact boards would pull loose, causing a fatal "Keyboard Calibration Error." When designing the VFX-SD, Ensoniq completely overhauled the internal chassis framing and shielding to permanently fix this hardware vulnerability.
The Custom Drum Waveforms: To maximize the utility of its new 24-track sequencer, Ensoniq upgraded the internal wave-ROM for the SD variant. They added 24 dedicated, high-fidelity acoustic and electronic drum and percussion waveforms that were completely absent from the original standard VFX model.
Polyphonic Aftertouch Royalty: Like its sibling units (such as the EPS sampler and the SQ-80), the VFX-SD features a premium keyboard bed capable of Polyphonic Aftertouch. This rare, luxurious mechanism allows pressure modulation to be applied independently to individual keys while holding down a chord, rather than modulating the entire global mix at once.
The VFX-SD II Refresh: In 1990, Ensoniq quietly rolled out the VFX-SD Version II. This mid-cycle refresh swapped out the internal 16-bit acoustic waveforms for the vastly superior, cleaner sample set that Ensoniq had compiled for their newer, high-end SD-1 flagship workstation.
