Released alongside the weighted 76-key TS-12, the TS-10 is a flagship 61-key digital synthesizer and music production workstation. While it shares the exact same software architecture, internal wavetable engine, and sequencing power as its larger sibling, the TS-10 was specifically optimized for synth purists, live keyboardists, and electronic music producers who preferred a fast, highly expressive synth-action keybed over heavy piano-weighted keys.
The internal architecture of the TS-10 features a 32-voice polyphony engine and a 12-part multi-timbral layout. Its synthesis core relies on a 6-Megabyte internal ROM containing 254 high-fidelity 16-bit acoustic, orchestral, and electronic waveforms. Like the TS-12, the TS-10 bridges the gap between a traditional rompler and a sampler: it includes built-in sample RAM (expandable up to 8 Megabytes via standard SIMM slots), allowing users to load and play back external sample libraries from Ensoniq's iconic EPS, EPS-16+, and ASR-10 hardware samplers via the integrated 3.5-inch floppy disk drive.
The physical hardware features a fast, velocity-sensitive 61-note synth-action keyboard that stands out due to its inclusion of true polyphonic aftertouch. The user interface utilizes a high-contrast vacuum fluorescent display (VFD) and a tactile matrix of navigation buttons. Sound design is further enhanced by a robust 24-track onboard sequencer and a studio-grade 24-bit programmable multi-effects processor powered by Ensoniq's proprietary ESP chip.
The Keybed Distinction: The primary structural difference between the two TS models is the keyboard assembly. While the TS-12 uses heavy, weighted Fatar keys, the TS-10 is equipped with an unweighted synth-action keybed. Crucially, the TS-10 keybed supports Polyphonic Aftertouch (sending independent pressure data for every individual finger), a luxury performance feature that the weighted keybed of the TS-12 physically could not support.
The SoundFinder Categories: To streamline the workflow for studio session players, the TS-10 features a dedicated SoundFinder system. This utility instantly organizes all internal programs and loaded disk samples into logical instrument categories (such as Pads, Basses, or Strings), allowing musicians to audition similar sounds across different memory banks with a single button press.
The Sample-Loading RAM Cap: While it cannot sample audio directly due to a lack of analog inputs, the TS-10 acts as a stellar playback engine for Ensoniq sampler disks. The onboard sample memory can be expanded using two standard 4MB SIMM modules. However, if a user installs two 4MB SIMMs, the internal OS automatically disables the base 2MB of onboard RAM, strictly capping the maximum usable sample memory at exactly 8 Megabytes.
Hyper-Wave Sequences: The TS-10 features Ensoniq's sophisticated Hyper-Wave architecture. This vector-style synthesis allows a single patch to step or crossfade through a programmed sequence of up to 16 completely different wavetable samples. The speed and direction of this wave sequence can be dynamically modulated in real-time using the modulation wheel, key velocity, or the keyboard's polyphonic aftertouch pressure.
