The Roland Alpha Juno-1 is a polyphonic analog synthesizer. It belongs to the Alpha Juno series, which also includes the Alpha Juno-2 and the rack-mounted MKS-50.
The instrument is based on a 6-voice polyphonic architecture using digitally controlled oscillators (DCOs) combined with an analog filter section. Each voice features a single main oscillator with multiple waveform options, a sub-oscillator, noise generation, and a 24 dB/octave resonant low-pass filter. The synth is monophonic in timbre (single part) but capable of full polyphonic performance.
Unlike earlier Juno models such as the Juno-60, the Alpha Juno-1 replaces traditional sliders and knobs with a simplified interface based on membrane buttons and a single data entry wheel known as the 'Alpha Dial'. This design allows access to a large number of parameters while keeping the front panel minimal.
The Alpha Juno-1 offers 64 factory presets and 64 user-programmable patches, with full MIDI implementation for external control and sequencing. It also includes a built-in chorus effect derived from earlier Roland Juno designs, used to thicken and widen the sound.
The keyboard features 49 keys and was designed as a more compact and affordable alternative to higher-end synthesizers of the time, while retaining the characteristic Roland Juno sound.
The Alpha Juno series became widely known in later years for its distinctive 'Hoover' sound, which was created using specific factory presets and became influential in techno, rave, and jungle music scenes.
