The Biostar MB-1433UIV is a versatile, late-generation Socket 3 VESA Local Bus (VLB) Baby AT motherboard engineered by Biostar around 1994. Designed to provide a high-speed pathway for DOS-based gaming and professional graphical workstations, the board is centered around the UMC UM8498F/UM8496F chipset cluster. The mainboard hosts a 237-pin ZIF Socket 3, providing flexible jumper-selectable voltage rails and clock multipliers to support Intel 486DX/DX2/DX4 and compatible processors at synchronous Front-Side Bus (FSB) speeds of 25 MHz, 33 MHz, or 40 MHz. Its expansion infrastructure is heavily geared toward the VLB performance standard, featuring three 32-bit VESA Local Bus slots—exceptionally high for a Baby AT board—alongside five 16-bit ISA slots. Memory management is handled by four 72-pin SIMM sockets (supporting up to 128 MB of FPM DRAM), backed by a socketed L2 secondary write-back static cache (SRAM) matrix configurable up to 512 KB.

The Three-Slot VLB Advantage: Most Baby AT boards of this era only featured two VLB slots due to electrical signal interference. Biostar managed to squeeze in a third slot by implementing a unique "buffer-re-drive" circuit near the chipset, which allowed for stable performance even with a VLB VGA card, a VLB IDE controller, and a high-speed VLB SCSI card installed simultaneously. This made the MB-1433UIV a dream board for high-end multimedia workstation builders in 1994.

The "UMC Green" BIOS: This board was one of the first to implement the UMC "Green PC" power-saving standards in the BIOS firmware. It allowed for advanced monitoring of IRQ lines to trigger hard drive spindle-down commands after periods of inactivity, a feature that was widely adopted for professional environments but often disabled by gamers who feared performance degradation during disk-intensive play.
