The board was designed as a high-performance alternative to standard 386 systems, effectively "hot-rodding" a 386 core to handle 486 instructions and triple its clock speed.

It’s significantly faster than a 386 but behaves differently than a true Intel 486.
VLB Tightness: A notorious issue with the Cougar is that the VLB slots were manufactured to such precise tolerances that inserting standard VLB cards can be a struggle—users often report having to apply significant force or "shaving" the card edges to get them to seat properly.
The Overclocking Legend: While the Blue Lightning was officially rated for 75 MHz (25 MHz base x 3), many units are capable of hitting 100 MHz or even 110 MHz.
