The 486 EISA-AE4 is a high-end, workstation-class motherboard from the early 1990s. It was also produced and sold under various OEM labels, including Silicon Star International.
This board represents the "Workstation" tier of the 486 era. Its defining feature is the EISA (Extended Industry Standard Architecture) bus. Unlike the more common VLB (VESA Local Bus) or standard ISA, EISA was a 32-bit bus designed to compete with IBM's MCA (Micro Channel Architecture), providing advanced features like bus mastering and high-bandwidth data transfers for SCSI controllers and network interface cards.
The "Workstation" Bridge: In the early 90s, if you were running a high-end UNIX server or a CAD workstation, you were likely running an EISA board. By the time the abae4 was common, the industry was already beginning to look toward PCI, making these late-model EISA boards a "last stand" for the architecture.
