This chipset was the high-performance evolution of the UMC 481 series. While the 481 was a budget-focused ISA workhorse, the 491/493 pair was designed to handle the increased memory demands of the early 90s, offering support for larger cache sizes and faster memory interleaving.

Northbridge (UM82C491F): The main System Controller. It handled CPU communication and was significantly more efficient at managing memory cycles than the earlier 481/482 series.
