The ISA-486SV2 is a premium 486-class motherboard that was highly regarded for its build quality and performance tuning options. It features a Socket 3 design, supporting the full array of Intel 486DX/DX2/DX4 and compatible processors. The board is built around the SiS (Silicon Integrated Systems) 85C471 chipset, which was widely considered one of the best-performing and most stable chipsets for the 486 architecture. It features a hybrid bus design, offering both VESA Local Bus (VLB) and ISA slots. Memory support includes four 72-pin SIMM sockets (up to 64 MB), and it features a dedicated L2 cache module (COAST) slot supporting up to 256 KB or 512 KB of high-speed SRAM.

TRIVIA

The "ASUS Quality" Benchmark: This board is famous for its "jumper-less" or simplified configuration capabilities relative to its competitors. ASUS invested heavily in PCB design, using high-quality capacitors and trace routing that allowed for higher, more stable overclocking than almost any other board of its time. It was the preferred choice for enthusiasts who wanted to push an Intel 486DX2-66 to 80 MHz or beyond.

The SiS 85C471 Advantage: Unlike the cheaper UMC or Opti chipsets, the SiS 85C471 used on the a486sv2 provided superior handling of the VLB bus. This effectively eliminated the "VLB jitter" that made other boards crash when using high-performance VLB graphics cards or SCSI controllers.
