The VL/EISA-486SV1 is an advanced, workstation-grade hybrid motherboard manufactured by ASUS around 1992 to 1993. Tailored for enterprise environments, high-end CAD stations, and early network servers, its defining characteristic is its multi-bus architecture. It features a unique expansion layout comprising one high-speed 32-bit VESA Local Bus (VLB) slot alongside five 32-bit EISA (Extended Industry Standard Architecture) expansion slots and two standard 16-bit ISA slots. Operating on a robust Socket 2 / Socket 3 infrastructure driven by a premium Intel 420EX (Aries) or high-end SiS chipset, the motherboard accommodates Intel 80486DX, DX2, and OverDrive microprocessors. To meet high-throughput processing demands, it features eight 30-pin SIMM sockets supporting up to 128 MB of system RAM alongside a modular L2 secondary cache controller holding up to 256 KB or 512 KB of static RAM (SRAM).
The Ultimate Bus Mashup: During the early 1990s 32-bit transition, server admins loved the high-reliability throughput and soft-configuration features of the EISA bus, while power users wanted the raw unbuffered speed of the VESA Local Bus (VLB) for graphics cards. The VL/EISA-486SV1 bridged both worlds, allowing a VLB graphics card to coexist with premium EISA SCSI storage host adapters.
Non-Volatile NVM Setup: Unlike standard ISA clone motherboards configured strictly through physical PCB jumpers or basic CMOS settings, EISA setups required a dedicated software floppy disk known as the ECU (EISA Configuration Utility). This utility wrote hardware profiles directly to a specialized Dallas NVRAM chip on the board to map expansion cards without peripheral resource conflicts.
