Sir John Falstaff was a character in Shakespeare's plays 'King Henry IV' and 'The Merry Wives of Windsor'.

'Laugh, and the world laughs with you; Weep, and you weep alone.' (from the backglass) is from the poem 'Solitude' by American poetess Ella Wheeler Wilcox (1850-1919).
