(Choujikuu Yousai Macross)
Choujikuu Yousai Macross is a side scrolling shooter by Namco and published by Bandai. The game is based on the popular anime series of the same name and known in the west as The Super Dimension Fortress Macross. The player takes controls of a VF-1 Valkyrie fighter and must destroy a series of Zentradi star destroyers. Each level is made of a series of three specific attack phases. The actions stars in outer space where the player blasts through endless waves of enemy ships, then a large Zentradi ship fills up the screen as more enemies and gun turrets flood the playfield with bullets. Finally, the VF-1 Valkyrie enters the starship and destroys its shielded reactor core within a time limit. Once the ship is blown to oblivion, a new mission starts and a more difficult Zentradi star destroyer must be destroyed. Like in the anime, the VF-1 Valkyrie fighter can change into three attack modes - the fighter mode features the fastest scroll speed but it is hard to maneuver and it lacks rapid fire, the balanced Gerwalk mode is fast and comes equipped with rapid fire, and the Battroid mode is the fastest on screen and can fire backward. The VF-1 Valkyrie can also use a limited amount of special attacks and unleash barrages of homing missiles. Finally, special items randomly appear on screen and give the fighter more life (F), extra shields (P), bonus points (B) or more homing missiles (M).
Choujikuu Yousai Macross was released on December 10, 1985 in Japan for 4500 Yen.
It was never released outside Japan.
